If someone puts a gun to your head in a dark alley and forces you to solve performance problem in a global web application, then recommending a CDN might just save your life. In less dramatic scenario it can still save a few million dollars and some jobs too. To be fair, ARPANET [1] was born to be used in defense establishment to handle communication during a nuclear attack and was never supposed to handle this high expectation. Now, the target is to get the whole country (i.e. South korea) connected at speed 1 gigabit per second by next year[4] . These kind of changes along with tabbed browsing has made user less patient and intolerable to anything other than fast. A study reveals that 1 second quicker delivery of page can increase conversion by 7% i.e. For $100,000/day ecommerce site, it means $2.5 million of extra revenues in a year. User experience of a site performance in global deployment is a combination of speed taken from user machine to connect to origin server and server processing time. Now think of a scenario where a user in South Korea(With a meagerly 100MBPS) has to connect to a site deployed in a country in Europe. The time user takes to connect with deployed server will depend on the network bandwidth available from ISP in each of the countries in between and internet traffic Jam. This could lead to user experience being determined by ISP bandwidth and make response times inconsistent across different geographies and unacceptable in some scenarios. Another key issue most application face is ability to handle spurt in traffic e.g. holiday season, cyber Monday[5] and during successful promotion where traffic of 300-1000% is a norm. IT executives face challenges of handing this load with existing infrastructure which results in main sites crashing down during these excessive loads[6]
