News: China Deal Could Push 2.9M iPhones in 2011

The iPhone's already popular status in the smartphone market could see a substantial boost once Apple wraps up negotiations with China's cell service providers. Sandford C. Bernstein & Co analyst Tony Sacconaghi estimated Apple could sell some 2.9 million handsets in the country by the end of 2011.

Apple released its answers to the Federal Communications Commission's questions regarding the company's move to block Google Voice-compatible applications from the iPhone and iPod touch App Store late Friday afternoon. In its responses, Apple confirmed that AT&T is not involved in the application process, and also stated that it in fact has not blocked Google's own Google Voice application, but instead is still involved in the review process.

Mr. Hawkins later founded the ill-fated 3DO Company, which went out of business in 2003. Then he started Digital Chocolate, which develops games for mobile devices and has become a star player at the App Store. It's a circular turn of events, given the fact that Mr. Hawkins served as Apple's Director of Strategy and Marketing until 1982.

China Unicom has agreed to purchase some five million iPhones for US$1.4 billion, according to a report originating with China Business News. According to sources that include Guangdong Unicom Deputy General Manager Zhou Youmeng, Apple is selling the phones for 2,000 CNY ($292.60 at the time of the report) each, for a grand total of 10 billion CNY ($1.46 billion).
