Hardy and RHP Jesse Crain. ARRIVALS: SS J.J. Hardy (trade with Brewers), LHP Mike Maroth (minor league free agent), RHP Clay Condrey (free agent from Phillies), 1B Jim Thome (free agent from Dodgers), 2B Orlando Hudson (free agent from Dodgers). MEDICAL WATCH: --1B Justin Morneau (stress fracture in vertebra, right wrist surgery in October 2009) should be ready in time for spring training. --RHP Joe Nathan (minor elbow surgery in October 2009) is expected to be ready in time for spring training. --3B Joe Crede (back surgery in September 2009) said the procedure went very well and immediately provided pain relief. He's hoping to be ready to go by spring training. --C Joe Mauer (strained right hip flexor) is healing well. --RHP Kevin Slowey (right wrist surgery in August 2009) will continue to rehab in the offseason.

The Twins didn't really need a left-handed hitting DH. They already had that in Jason Kubel. They signed Jim Thome anyway. Their most overwhelming infield need was for a right-handed hitting third baseman, not for a switch-hitting second baseman, which they had in Nick Punto. But they signed Orlando Hudson anyway, considering both Thome and Hudson to be moves that make them more of a playoff contender. The 32-year-old Hudson, who batted .283 with a .357 on-base percentage, nine homers, 35 doubles and six triples in 2009, said he chose Minnesota from a field that also included the Indians and Nationals because of their postseason chances. "You never know who can contend, but I knew Minnesota was automatic. With (Justin) Morneau, (Joe) Mauer, (Denard) Span at the top, I knew they were a contender," Hudson said in a conference call. "I'm not saying the other teams I was looking at weren't because you never know what the future holds, but I know the Twins are going to contend." Hudson's arrival takes away the everyday spot Punto would have had at second base, shifting the utility infielder into a battle with prospect Danny Valencia and Brendan Harris at third base. It also makes Alexi Casilla expendable and creates a glut of infielders (Harris, Valencia, Punto, Casilla and Matt Tolbert) for manager Ron Gardenhire to sort through in spring training. Hudson was a Type-A free agent this offseason, but because the Dodgers did not offer him salary arbitration, the Twins will not forfeit any draft picks for signing him.
