By TOM HAUDRICOURT Without the persistence of Bud Selig, the Milwaukee Brewers might still be the Seattle Pilots. That same persistence resulted in the building of Miller Park, which guaranteed the franchise would not relocate again. On those two counts alone, much less his other accomplishments, the Brewers figured Selig deserved to stand - in bronze - with Hank Aaron and Robin Yount outside of the club's retractable-roof facility. The Brewers announced Monday that they will honor baseball's commissioner and the team's former owner with a statue at Miller Park's Home Plate Plaza.

Vizquel gets Aparicio's No. 11

The White Sox are taking Hall of Fame shortstop Luis Aparicio's No. 11 out of retirement for newly acquired 11-time Gold Glove winner Omar Vizquel. Vizquel said he will wear the number as a tribute to his Venezuelan countryman. ''For me it's like a huge celebration, trying to keep his name alive and trying to spread the word of Venezuelan shortstops,'' Vizquel said during a conference call Monday. ''I think every kid now -- the new generation of shortstops in Venezuela -- has to know about Luis Aparicio and everything that he means to us in this game.''

WITH the Mets , it is difficult to determine whether they are trying to spin the news or are just delusional. Consider the state of the roster: For most of this offseason, they acknowledged a desire to upgrade at catcher, second base, slugging (even beyond Jason Bay) and the rotation. Now, with spring training nine days away, Mets officials are suddenly pleased with a group that has Omir Santos catching, Luis Castillo still at second, little lefty power and the same rotation that so disappointed last year.

--RHP Marco Estrada was claimed off waivers from the Nationals. Estrada, 26, spent most of the 2009 season at Class AAA Syracuse, where he went 9-5 with a 3.63 ERA in 27 games (25 starts). In 15 major league appearances, all but one in relief, he is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA. --RHP Tim Dillard was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Estrada. Dillard, 26, went 11-7 with a 4.52 ERA in 24 starts at Class AAA Nashville last season but fared badly in two relief appearances (12.46 ERA) with the Brewers. Dillard cleared waivers and was sent outright to Class AAA Nashville. --RHP Chris Smith accepted an outright assignment to Class AAA Nashville. Smith was designated for assignment when the Brewers claimed INF/OF Joe Inglett off waivers from Texas. Because it was Smith's second outright assignment, he had the right to become a free agent if he so chose. --RHP David Riske, who underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery last June 1, is ahead of schedule on his throwing program and has an aggressive goal of being ready by opening day. Riske is on the third year of a three-year, $13 million contract. --2B Rickie Weeks, who had wrist surgery last May that forced him to miss the rest of the 2009 season, was examined by team physician William Raasch and given a clean bill of health. Weeks is not expected to be restricted in any way during workouts when spring training begins. BY THE NUMBERS: 4 -- Players claimed off waivers by the Brewers' this offseason.
