ROTATION: Starters -- Point guard Tyreke Evans, Shooting guard Kevin Martin, Small forward Omri Casspi, Small forward Donte Greene, Center Spencer Hawes. Bench -- Forward Jason Thompson, Guard Beno Udrih, forward Jon Brockman, forward Ime Udoka, forward Andres Nocioni, forward Sean May, Guard Sergio Rodriguez.
PLAYER NOTES:
--F Jason Thompson returned to the Kings after missing two games because of a death in his family. Thompson had played every game of his career to that point, including all 82 as a rookie and the first 58 of this season. He came off the bench and contributed 10 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes.
--G Kevin Martin had a number of good moments against the Raptors on Sunday, but he continued to struggle with his shots. Martin, the sixth-year player who returned from a left wrist injury on Jan. 15 after missing the previous two months, hit just 7 of 18 shots, only 1 of 6 from beyond the arc.
--F Sean May had one of his best games of the season against Toronto on Sunday, hitting 4 of 5 shots for eight points and grabbing two rebounds in just eight minutes. After playing a combined nine minutes between Nov. 8 and Jan. 23, May has played in six of the last seven games.
MEDICAL WATCH:
--G/F Francisco Garcia (right wrist fracture) is expected to return after the All-Star break. He has been out since his exercise ball accident on Oct. 9. The fifth-year player was bench pressing with 90-pound dumbbells in each arm when the ball exploded and the weights caused the injury, which required surgery.
--While the New Jersey Nets have seemingly locked up the title of NBA's worst team this season, the Kings -- who had that infamy last season when they won just 17 games -- continued to look as if they might wind up being the second worst. They have lost 20 of 23 games and have fallen to 16-34; only Golden State and Minnesota (both 13-36 through Sunday) and New Jersey are worse. The Warriors have been as bad as the Kings of late, losing 12 of their last 14. The Timberwolves, however, have won four straight games.
--Considering the Kings' recent lack of chemistry and the fact that they had underwhelming talent to begin with, it appears it will take a near-perfect game for them to win on the road. That wasn't the case against the Raptors as they gave away points at the free throw line in missing 11 of 36 attempts. The Kings have lost their last 11 games on the road since their 35-point comeback in Chicago on Dec. 21.
--As if the Kings don't struggle enough on the road, their schedule leading up to Sunday's Toronto game was certainly less than ideal. After playing at home against Phoenix on Friday night, they flew to Toronto on Saturday morning and had a noon tipoff East Coast time Sunday.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "We couldn't finish the deal, and it's primarily because we couldn't get the stops we needed. It was about 42 or 44 minutes of really good basketball for us. The four to six minutes that wasn't gives us a loss." -- Kings coach Paul Westphal on his team's loss to Toronto on Sunday.
The Kings have 10 days to pick a direction in their ongoing rebuilding process, and it remains unclear which way they'll go before the Feb. 18 trade deadline.
It has been a long haul for Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie, from his 2004 trade of Chris Webber to Philadelphia to the flurry of moves he made last February in a long overdue attempt to blow up the roster. Now, it appears that Petrie -- whose next objective is to find a formidable big man to add to his ineffective frontcourt -- has three ways to go.
He could deal for one of the many impact big men who may be available, from Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire to Toronto's Chris Bosh or Utah's Carlos Boozer. The danger there, of course, is that all of those types of players have expiring contracts, and there is no guarantee they'll sign in Sacramento as free agents in the summer.
Petrie could trade for a lower level talent whose contract would add significant payroll for years to come. Some players mentioned in the media range from the Sixers' Samuel Dalembert to New Orleans' Emeka Okafor.
Or, of course, Petrie could wait until this summer to make a major move. The Kings players most likely to be involved in any such deal are small forward Andres Nocioni (whose contract runs through 2012) and forward Kenny Thomas (who has an expiring contract).
The blockbuster name that looks unlikely to be dealt is Kings shooting guard Kevin Martin.
RAPTORS 115, KINGS 104: The Kings played one of their best games in weeks against the Raptors, but a 17-point fourth quarter did them in as they started a three-game, East Coast road trip. They had no answer for Raptors forward Chris Bosh, who had 36 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
It was
Raptors' forward Hedo Turkoglu, who
wore it reluctantly yesterday afternoon to protect an orbital-bone

There is a quiet confidence oozing from the
Raptors these days, nothing too
brash or openly boastful or overly demonstrative.
It's a professionalism that comes from confidence and a feeling
that they will win games rather than a hope that they will.
It was there again on Sunday, some patience and lockdown defence
and a simple knowledge that they would take care of business.
