Nearly 1 million delirious fans roared and wept upon seeing returning hero Eli Manning at the Giants' triumphant parade in lower Manhattan yesterday - and the quarterback responded by thrusting the Super Bowl trophy high in the air. There were others on Manning's float as it glided along the Canyon of Heroes - Cuomo, Bloomberg, and powerbrokers like the Mara and Tisch families, who own the Giants - but the revelers were focused on one person above all.

Bears in a rush to improve defensive line

Despite all the positive talk about the Bears' defense last season â€” most of it coming from players and coaches at Halas Hall â€” Lovie Smith's team wasn't very impressive on that side of the ball. The Bears were a respectable 14th in points and 17th in yards allowed, and they were stout against the run, finishing fifth in yards and 10th in average gain allowed.

The obvious No. 1 bullet point heading into the offseason is the status of WR Wes Welker and whether or not the Patriots will hammer out a long-term extension or slap him with the franchise tag. Either way, he'll be back in 2012. Given the way the Giants locked down on their tight ends in the Super Bowl, it might be in the Patriots' best interest to pursue a legitimate outside receiving threat. Bringing back Deion Branch is a nice option, but he's going to have a diminished role if he returns to the team next year. On defense, the Patriots must decide whether to let their young secondary continue to grow, or look for a quick fix in the free-agent market. Looking toward the draft would only welcome the same problems they're having now; a veteran presence in the secondary could eliminate some of the issues they had. MEDICAL WATCH --TE Rob Gronkowski has told reporters he has no plans for surgery on his injured left ankle, but that remains to be seen. --QB Tom Brady reportedly aggravated a left shoulder strain during Super Bowl XLVI, but the injury is not believed to be serious, nor will it require much attention in the offseason.
