Using MethodRental.SwapMethodBody to do Method Level JIT Compilation

IKVM.NET has always had a classgranualarity JIT. Whenever a type is first "used" the CLR fires the AppDomain.TypeResolve event and at that point the IKVM.NET runtime compiles the Java bytecode to CIL for all of the methods in the class. I don't recall my exact thought process, but I assume that when I started on IKVM.NET I looked at MethodRental.SwapMethodBody and was scared away by the lack of documentation and the fact that it requires full trust...
Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
Heres an issue that cost me several hours and I suspect that theres something in Visual Studio 2010 and the size of my solution thats to blame. I was quite happily working in the MsmqToWcf example of the WF_WCF_Samples to learn about MSMQ. So far so good. However, when I moved to my real project I got an exception in debug mode: The assembly with display name 'Report.XmlSerializers' failed to load in the 'LoadFrom' binding context of the AppDomain with ID 1. The cause of the failure was: System.IO.FileNotFoundException:...
Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
Being more involved in the engineering process of a product I had the chance to participate in the design of various features instead of just the ones that Im responsible for delivering. One of those areas was the way we would enable developers to produce localized applications. Before this process I have to be honest and as an app developer never really paid much attention to providing localized versions of any app that I wrote. I had absolutely no good reason for coming to that decision, just never...
Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
Bend Telerik OpenAccess ORM to Your Will with Type Converters – Storing Classes to XML

			<pheedo:origLink>http://dotnetslackers.com/XML/re-694715_Bend_Telerik_OpenAccess_ORM_to_Your_Will_with_Type_Converters_amp_ndash_Storing_Classes_to_XML.aspx</pheedo:origLink>

In a previous blog I showed how to customize Telerik OpenAccess ORM data mappings using custom TypeConverters. In particular we looked at storing, and querying, an enum by its name rather than its int value. In this example, I will show how to get OpenAccess to serialize a class to xml, and store it in the database. In the end you will have a reusable TypeConverter you can use to store any class as XML using OpenAccess! :)

Creating the Type Converter

The first thing we need to do is create the type converter. To do that, simply grab the basic skeleton I displayed in this blog post. Then implement the class as follows (see comments inline):

Set up the Data Model

Next configure the OpenAccess Data model to use this type converter for a property in the data model. In this example I created a simple UserSettings class I want to store in the database as xml.

The class looks like this:

Now add a property on one of the objects in the data model using this new class:

The final step is to tell OpenAccess to use the new type converter to handle the database mapping for the new UserSettings Property.
Now we are ready to rock!
Result

Now that the data model is all wired up, the new type converter can be tested using the following code:
And the result as seen in the database!?

Since the data is stored as xml, we can click on it and see all the data stored in the column:

So the object is stored to the database as we wanted, but is the data retrieved correctly?

Indeed it is!

Conclusions

In this blog I showed how it is possible to create a custom type converter to store classes as XML using OpenAccess ORM. Hopefully you find this useful! In the attached code there are many other cool TypeConverter examples, feel free to play around with them. Also, feel free to let me know any cool TypeConverters you make! :)

Download Source

Happy Coding!

Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
A while ago I wrote an IL disassembler to test IKVM.Reflection. Both as a correctness test and also to test if the API surface exposes enough of the underlying information. I thought it would make a good IKVM.Reflection example (although the code won't win any awards, it's a bit of a hack). One nice feature is that it tries really hard to emit the same output file as the .NET ildasm to make comparison easier. There's even a command line option to match a specific...
Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
One of the advantages of IKVM.Reflection over System.Reflection is that it is much easier to load an assembly without having to load its dependencies. This functionality is used by Mono's C# compiler to load referenced assemblies without having to (potentially) load the transitive closure of dependencies of those assemblies. Here's a simple example that loads an assembly and prints its types and members: using System; using IKVM.Reflection; class...
Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
CLR Supported Custom Attributes

After working with the CLR for more than a decade, once in a while I stillrun intothe occasional surprise. It turns out that the (non pseudo-) custom attributes that CLR recognizes are only matched by name, not assembly. So you can do this for example: using System; using System.Threading; namespace System { class ThreadStaticAttribute : global::System.Attribute { } } class Program { [System.ThreadStaticAttribute] ...
Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
Building Hypermedia Web APIs

Hypermedia is one of those concepts really hard to grasp when building Http aware APIs (or Web APIs). As human beings, we are constantly dealing with hypermedia in the existing web by following links or posting data from some forms that take us to a next level. We typically remember the entry point or URL for the retrieving the home page of web site, and we can move from there on to different sections using hypermedia artifacts. Those URL usually tend to be nice and easy to remember, but they dont...
Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
Unlike most bugs that I run into, this one I actively went looking for. After being reminded of the cloning attack (in the context of Java) I wrote some reflection code to scan the BCL for public types that are cloneable (i.e. subclassable) and contain unmanaged pointer fields. This is a bad combination. A class that showed up as potentially vulnerable was SocketAsyncEventArgs and a few minutes with ildasm confirmed it. I had at that time fairly recently...
Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
