Last week we highlighted Den Delimarsky's Visual Studio Achievements for Windows Phone 7 app. On this Metro Monday, seems fitting to pair that post up with this one. With Windows 8 and Metro a common question is, "How hard is it to re-use, re-purpose or port a Windows Phone 7 app to a Windows 9 Metro Style app?"Den's stepped up and answered that very question...Porting Visual Studio Achievements for Windows Phone to Windows 8 Article SeriesVisual Studio Achievements for Windows Phone is an open-source...
Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
The last GTC conference in the US was 2 years ago and I was there as an attendee. You may recall from that blog post that we were running UX studies at the time. It really feels great 2 years later, to be back at GTC presenting two sessions on C++ AMP, demonstrating our progress that includes input from those early studies. If you are attending GTC (in person or virtually later), be sure to watch my two-part session. Part 1 is S0242 on Wednesday 5pm and part 2 is S0244 on Thursday 10am.
Visual Studio 11 – Now with some Color

 <pheedo:origLink>http://dotnetslackers.com/Visual_Studio/re-702834_Visual_Studio_11_amp_ndash_Now_with_some_Color.aspx</pheedo:origLink>

The Visual Studio is constantly reviewing items that have been posted to their User Voice site. One of the items that Ive been asking for, installation customization in Visual Studio, has been voted up to number 4 on the list. Keep the votes coming.

Another item that I have voted for is adding color back to Visual Studio. Yesterday morning, the Visual Studio team announced that changes have been made and will be reflected in the Visual Studio Release Candidate. While I still feel there can be more work on the UI, I think it is heading back in the right direction. I get the consistent look that the teams are going for across products and Microsoft is betting heavily in the metro-style.

Some of the items that have been changed include changes to the icons, adding in more color to icons and menu items, and creating a lighter background.

Heres a quick before and after shot borrowed from their post:

Heres what it looks like based on the state of your development process:

Hopefully well continue to see more improvement before the RC.

Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
Visual Studio 11 UI Update - Improvements in RC

I see by the Visual Studio Blog that Microsoft has backed out the worst of the darkness in the default Visual Studio 11 interface. Many of the ALL CAPS headings are gone and theyve even added some colour to the previously monochrome icons. This is certainly an improvement that we can live with. However, I still dont understand why theyre being so stingy with the colour pixels. I call it the Visual Studio Dungeon theme. The most intriguing part is that theyve retained ALL CAPS for the main menu...
Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
ERROR: Resource name XXX cannot be used more than once

 <pheedo:origLink>http://dotnetslackers.com/Visual_Studio/re-698665_ERROR_Resource_name_XXX_cannot_be_used_more_than_once.aspx</pheedo:origLink>

A couple weeks ago I had a client call me up with a perplexing build error. He had an ASP.NET 4 Web Application project open in Visual Studio 2010 that he was working on when, suddenly, the following error cropped up when building:

Resource name xxx.resources cannot be used more than once.

There was no line number, just this error message. According to my client, the project built fine minutes before the error started appearing and, in the interim, he had not made any changes that he was aware of: he had not changed any code; had not created any new web pages; had not deleted anything; had not changed the projects settings.

Unfortunately, we were unable to find much help online. While there are a lot of messageboard posts and blog entries noting this error, most of them were in the context of duplicate key names in resource files my clients project was not using resource files.

Anyway, we banged our heads on it for a good hour before we finally chose the nuclear option: start excluding files one by one, building after each one, and see if the error goes away. A ham-fisted approach for sure, but one that would likely identify the culprit.

Eventually we got to the obj folder why was that part of the project? The obj folder As we started working through the files, I noticed in Solution Explorer that the obj folder holds temporary build files, including .resource files. I presume that when building the project Visual Studio was attempting to create the same files that were already part of the project, and hence the error. In any event, excluding the obj folder from the project did the trick. Once it was omitted the project built without error.

So how did this happen? My client likes having the Show all files option turned on in the Solution Explorer. My guess is that he inadvertently right-clicked on the excluded obj folder and clicked the Include in project option. Or something, because he said he did not intentionally add the folder to his project. Regardless, its presence caused the build to choke and removing it fixed everything.

Thought I would share this experience here so others would have another possible avenue to check in the event that they receive this build error.

Happy Programming!

Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
JustTrace and JustMock in Visual Studio 11

 <pheedo:origLink>http://dotnetslackers.com/Visual_Studio/re-690479_JustTrace_and_JustMock_in_Visual_Studio_11.aspx</pheedo:origLink>

Microsoft released Visual Studio 11 Beta just over a month ago, and we quickly ensured bleeding edge developers would have access to their favorite productivity tool, Telerik JustCode! So, what about the other Just products?

Visual Studio 11 Support

We wouldnt dare leave our loyal JustMock and JustTrace users out of the fun. If you keep current with our internal builds (or service pack for JustTrace), you already have versions with Visual Studio 11 support! However, we only install our products into the versions of Visual Studio you selected. Since you probably installed the tools before VS11 came out, you may need to change your setup. Go to Control Panel, Programs, select either Telerik JustTrace or Telerik JustMock, and then click the Change button. The wizard will come up, and you will need to select the Change option again. This will take you to the Select Components to Install screen, where you can make the necessary modification.

Heres a view of JustTrace in action from within Visual Studio 11!

Whats Next?

Visual Studio 11 is still in beta, and you should expect some instability with it. Be sure to keep VS11 up-to-date with the most current patches. If a problem is blocking, you can always use the standalone JustTrace profiler and use JustMock outside of Visual Studio.

You may be wondering about our fourth product, JustDecompile? Since it doesnt integrate with Visual Studio, theres no problem. Just remember that when you install VS11, it will install the .NET Framework 4.5 in place over 4.0. To look inside the 4.5 framework, simply use Open, Load Framework, Load .NET 4.0 Assemblies. Weve also tested JustDecompile in the Windows 8 Beta, and they get along fine with only a few minor issues.

Happy testing and profiling!

Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
Lazy Programming for Smarties

 <pheedo:origLink>http://dotnetslackers.com/Visual_Studio/re-684905_Lazy_Programming_for_Smarties.aspx</pheedo:origLink>

As a programmer, I can honestly say that I am lazy. Forget the menial job of repeating tasks... if it takes me an hour to complete an iteration, I would rather spend 3 hours automating the process. You never know when you might need to do it again, and the click of a button is much more satisfying than an hour of processing data. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way either, otherwise Andy Hunt and Dave Thomas wouldn’t have codified the DRY principle in The Pragmatic Programmer…. Don’t Repeat Yourself.

Visual Studio makes it easy to be a lazy coder. Out of the box, you get the Extension Manager in the Tools menu. Open it up and you should immediately install the other tool every lazy developer loves: NuGet. If you want to automate your tests so you’re not spending hours fixing bugs, simply add the NuGet package for a unit testing framework and you’re on your way. Need to test without dependencies? There’s a NuGet package for JustMock. NuGet is simple, sweet, and eliminates the need to download and compile other people’s projects.

When it comes to writing code, Visual Studio provides a lot of time saving shortcuts: refactorings, code snippets, and a myriad of other tools. However, it doesn’t do everything, and you may find yourself desiring so much more. Luckily, you don’t have to automate these processes yourself. If you truly want to save time while coding, return to the Extension Manager and search for Telerik JustCode (or save time by clicking the link).

JustCode integrates seamlessly with Visual Studio without slowing it down no matter the size of your solution. Since it’s unobtrusive, you may not realize it’s there… until you use another developer’s machine and wonder what’s missing.

1 – Find Errors Before You Compile

The first thing you will notice after installing JustCode is the code analysis. Issues with your codebase are detected in real time and out of process for blazing fast speed. There are no hourglasses as errors and warnings are detected, and you can quickly navigate through them through them using the colored gutter markers. A green light is displayed if everything checks out. Found a problem? The quick fix option will take care of it for you. JustCode also inspects for improvements to code readability, and displays them under quick hints.

2 – Change Code Without Writing It
Everyone modifies their code to improve readability and maintainability, and JustCode simplifies the process by providing contextual refactorings and code fixes for common code changes. It will also generate members to fill in your classes with needed functionality, such as Equals() and GetHashCode() to compare for equality.

What developer likes writing code? All of us, of course, but who likes writing the same code over and over? JustCode provides configurable code templates to insert what couldn’t be abstracted away. There are two types: insert and surround templates, and JustCode is smart enough to help complete them if an appropriate variable is in scope.

3 – Find What You’re Looking For

Before JustCode, I had a tendency to perform a Find in Files. Wading through tons of irrelevant search results is a waste of time… if I’m looking for a class; take me to its definition! Now, it’s easy to find exactly what I’m looking for by specifying files, members, types and symbols. You can also find usages, extended usages, and even unused members to see what can be culled. If you happen to navigate to a class defined in an assembly, it’s decompiled immediately within Visual Studio.

4 – Eliminate the Hassle of Testing Frameworks

Nearly every testing framework comes with a test runner, but most require you to leave Visual Studio to run your tests. If that wasn’t bad enough, these test runners won’t take you to a broken test. JustCode’s test runner is integrated with Visual Studio, provides many filtering options, and most importantly, will help you navigate your tests. It also supports a ton of .NET testing frameworks, in addition to two JavaScript testing frameworks. If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of moving to a different testing framework, there is no need to do a major overhaul. JustCode will simultaneously support MSTest, xUnit, NUnit 2.5, MbUnit 2.4, MbUnit 3, MSpec, Gallio, QUnit, and Jasmine. There is no need to do a major overhaul.

5 – Play Well With Others

It is frustrating when working with other developers who use different code formatting settings. With JustCode, these settings can be shared for the entire project to ensure a consistent programming experience. The hardest part is getting the team to agree on the settings. Once everything is set, the code cleaning feature will wipe away all traces of peevish coding tics and funny formatting. If you have teammates who consistently use odd naming styles, JustCode will give you a warning and recommend a name that fits the defined convention.

Back to Coding
It’s okay to be a lazy developer. After all, coders just want to code, and with JustCode you will get more coding done. Try it out for 60 days with dedicated support, videos, and an awesome community of JustCode fans!
CodeProject

Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
Templating is a killer feature of many technologies that helps reduce code and make it more manageable and adaptable. Knockout.js has a native template engine (or you can tie in a custom templating engine), but often I like to go a bit further and load my templates from external files. In this months Papas Perspective column in Visual Studio Magazine I cover the Knockout.js External Template Engine and how it makes using external templates with Knockout.js a breeze. Check it out.
