Only One Dialog Box is Allowed in Silverlight

			<pheedo:origLink>http://dotnetslackers.com/Silverlight/re-710561_Only_One_Dialog_Box_is_Allowed_in_Silverlight.aspx</pheedo:origLink>

Today I came across an interesting issue. I have a Silverlight project in which Id like to be able to show the OpenFileDialog as well as a JavaScript alert. However, I was able to determine (and confirmed at StackOverflow), that the alert cannot happen first as the OpenFileDialog would be a second dialog on a single user action to the browser. By commenting out the alert, I was able to continue just as planned.

The error that results is the following:

The text reads: [FileDialog_UserInitiated] Arguments:

Debugging resource strings are unavailable. Often the key and arguments provide sufficient information to diagnose the problem. See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=106663&Version=4.1.10111.0& File=System.Windows.dll&Key=FileDialog_UserInitiated

However, when browsing to the URL, youll notice that the link no longer exists.

I dont use Silverlight much and so I havent come across this before. Hopefully this helps someone in the future.

Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?

Hello everyone and welcome back to XAMLflix with RadCalculator for Silverlight and WPF. I hope you have been enjoying the series as last week we took a look at RadPropertyGrid and RadComboBox. This week we will be taking a look at RadCalculator for Silverlight and WPF.

What is XAMLflix you might ask? Well, it is Teleriks way of teaching you how to use both new and existing controls from Teleriks XAML suite. Each and every Tuesday and Thursday, we will provide a fresh batch of videos and sample projects highlighting a different control. Since our Silverlight and WPF share a common codebase and API, you only have to learn how to use these controls once! You can simply copy and paste the code between frameworks.

Be sure to check out www.telerik.com/xamlflix for all the videos!

RadCalculator

RadCalculator for Silverlight/WPF has a simple easy-to-use interface enabling the end user to perform all basic calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division as well as some more complicated ones reciprocal, square root, negate. The operations can be executed either by clicking the calculator buttons, or by using your keyboard. You can also use the numeric keypad to type numbers and operators by pressing Num Lock. Furthermore, all the Memory and Clear features are exposed as well.

Getting Started with RadCalculator In this video, we will see how easy it is to get started with RadCalculator. We will begin by adding RadCalculator to a new Silverlight Application and explore its features. We will wrap up the video by learning how to add the RadCalculatorPicker to you Silverlight project as well. (Download the Project)

Customize RadCalculator by Creating Custom Operations In this video, we will learn how RadCalculator can be easily extended by defining custom operations that are needed in specific scenarios. We will add four additional buttons and define the custom operations in code. (Download the Project)

Use RadCalculatorPicker as an editing element in RadGridView In this video, we are going to show that RadCalculatorPicker can be embedded as an editing element for a column in RadGridView. Your users will be able to perform calculations inside RadGridView with ease! (Download the Project)

Wrap-Up

Hopefully youve seen here just how quickly and easily you can add RadCalculator in your next line-of-business application. And as a reminder, this is only one of controls offered in the Silverlight/WPF suite. So, feel free to download your own copy of the Silverlight and WPF control suite right now.

Also, before you go, I need your help. Telerik is driven by customer feedback. This is where I need you to tell me what you want to see in the future. Whether it is new controls, additional features or content based off of existing controls, then just drop me a comment in this post or send me a tweet. I look forward to hearing from you shortly!

@mbcrump

Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
As a Silverlight MVP (Microsoft Most Valuable Professional) and book lover I tend to have a lot of Silverlight books if not all of them that were ever published. that being said I'd say that this is one that will last a while on my self before it gets archived to the main library. I think the main reason is that it pulls good material from some of the other titles and puts it all into a more relevant reference material. Where before I would have used only parts of any one of those books virtually...
Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
Telerik XAML Controls and the VS11 Beta Release

			<pheedo:origLink>http://dotnetslackers.com/Silverlight/re-670773_Telerik_XAML_Controls_and_the_VS11_Beta_Release.aspx</pheedo:origLink>

Hello everyone,

Heres a quick update on everything related to the Visual Studio 11 Beta Release. For those eager to use our controls in VS11 Beta, we have good news for you coming on March 21st, 2012 we officially roll out Service Pack 1 for Silverlight and WPF which will include limited support for VS11 Beta. Like many Beta products, we have discovered an issue with our XAML controls being automatically added to the ToolBox. We have alerted Microsoft of the issue and they are working to resolve them in the Visual Studio 11 RC. But for the time-being, we have a work-around included below for those of you eager to get a head start on VS11.

Steps to Restore the ToolBox Items:

The first thing that you will notice after installing the XAML control suite is that the Telerik controls are missing from the Toolbox as shown below:

You can easily add these items back by right clicking anywhere in the Toolbox and selecting Choose Items.

Once the Choose Items dialog has loaded then you can click Browse and navigate to the binary folder where the controls reside. In this case, we are creating a Silverlight 5 application so navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Telerik\RadControls for Silverlight Q1 2012\Binaries\Silverlight. Go ahead and select the binary of the control you wish to use and click OK.

You can now add a Filter called, Telerik and select the items you wish to add back to the ToolBox.

In this case, we have selected several charts to be displayed in the ToolBox.

You can now drag and drop the control onto your designer window and still get the SmartTags that you are used to in Visual Studio 2010.

Thanks for reading and if you have any questions or comments then please leave them below and someone from our team will get back to you.

Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
Introducing PDF Viewer for Silverlight/WPF

			<pheedo:origLink>http://dotnetslackers.com/Silverlight/re-660757_Introducing_PDF_Viewer_for_Silverlight_WPF.aspx</pheedo:origLink>

The long-awaited 2012 Q1 with the first official version of RadPdfViewer is already a fact! This is also the first release of the control for WPF, so dont forget to check it out in the demos if you have missed it: WPF and Silverlight.

A big Thank You to all who tried using RadPdfViewer for Silverlight when it was still in a beta stage for providing such a valuable feedback on the control! We have come a long way with your help and hope that you will enjoy the improvements that the first official version brings out.

<img alt=" src="http://blogs.telerik.com:80//Libraries/Nikolay_Atanasov/pdf_viewer_2.sflb?;decreaseOnly=true" />

For the past few months after we first introduced RadPdfViewer as Beta, we have managed to extend the list of supported PDF features in order to be able to show correctly intrinsic PDF files like the ones normally used in LOB applications. The ameliorations include a wider set of image formats and an extensible architecture for plugging in custom filters. The text rendering system was also rethought and improved to ensure the professional look of the document preview. We also managed to implement clipping and support for color spaces, further polishing the way PDF files are shown. Last but not least, if you use the control in Silverlight 5, you will now be able to print your documents faster and with less memory footprint, because the control now utilizes the vector printing of Silverlight 5.

In the 2012 Q1 release an MVVM friendly API is introduced, which will help you integrate RadPdfViewer more easily. Following popular demand, the DocumentSource of RadPdfViewer has been implemented as a DependencyProperty, allowing data-binding to a Stream, a URI where a document can be found, or a string representing such a URI. For example, if Source is the property in your view-model which you wish to bind the content of the viewer to, you can do that as follows:

<telerik:RadPdfViewer x:Name="viewer" DocumentSource="{Binding Source, Converter={StaticResource PdfDocumentSourceValueConverter}}" />

PdfDocumentSourceValueConverter is a static resource declared as:

<fixed:PdfDocumentSourceValueConverter x:Key="PdfDocumentSourceValueConverter" />

The toolbar that RadPdfViewer used in the beta has been implemented as a separate control now in order to allow customizations of the functionality provided to the end user.

Here is an example of how a RadToolBar can be wired with the commands of the PdfViewer:

  <telerik:RadToolBar DataContext="{Binding ElementName=pdfViewer, Path=Commands}">

  </telerik:RadToolBar>

After setting the DataContext of the toolbar, you can proceed to fill in buttons bound to the commands of the viewer like this:

            <controls:RadButton Padding="4" Command="{Binding OpenPdfDocumentCommand}">

                <ToolTipService.ToolTip>

                    <TextBlock Text="Open" />

                </ToolTipService.ToolTip>

                <Image Source="/Telerik.Windows.Controls.FixedDocumentViewers;component/Images/open.png" Stretch="None" />

            </controls:RadButton>

In this way, you will get the same button that the navigation panel of RadPdfViewer had in the beta version. Only that this time, you can customize the tooltip and the icon or even change the command executed. If you would like to preserve the look of the PdfViewer from the Beta, you can open the demos and copy the content from there. Of course, you can implement other kind of UI just as easily.

Now the experience you get with RadPdfViewer for Silverlight will be much closer to the desktop applications you use for viewing PDFs. What is more, you can build applications with similar look and functionality for Silverlight and WPF with minimal effort.

Happy developing!

Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
Whats New in Telerik JustTrace Q1 2012

			<pheedo:origLink>http://dotnetslackers.com/Silverlight/re-659672_What_s_New_in_Telerik_JustTrace_Q1_2012.aspx</pheedo:origLink>

Our Q1 2012 release cycle has been very exciting! All of the Just products received features and enhancements, and we used the opportunity to officially launch JustDecompile. But so far, weve been rather quiet on JustTrace, and the JustTrace team has been working hard to add features that will best help you track down performance and memory issues in your application. We recently added the capability for finding the largest memory retainers, refactored the live data view, and introduced new capabilities for profiling Silverlight. If you caught the webinar, you did get to see the latter in action, but heres a run down of whats new in Telerik JustTrace Q1 2012.

Largest Memory Retainers

Weve added a new view for memory snapshots that will help you track down memory leaks. This view shows you which objects pressure memory the most by retaining other objects that consume a lot of memory. You can use this to reduce memory usage. For example, I may notice large arrays consuming memory, but that in itself doesnt tell me much. With the largest memory retainers view, it is possible to find which objects are holding onto other objects, such as the arrays, and are the root of the problem.

Here are the terms:

A dominator of a given object A is another object B that is present in all paths in the object reference graph that lead from a GC (Garbage Collector) root to A.

An immediate dominator of a given object A is the nearest of all of A's dominators.

A dominator root is an object which doesn't have dominators.

These terms can be confusing, so heres the simplified version. Dominators are memory retainers: they hold other objects that consume memory and prevent that memory from being freed. For example, I may have an object that consumes only 32 bytes of memory, but it may reference other objects that in turn hold much more memory. This can be discerned from the view.

<img alt=" style="border:1px solid #000000;width: 600px; height: 277px;" src="http://blogs.telerik.com:80//Libraries/Just_Teams/JT_LMR_for_Q1_Blog_Post.sflb" />

The tree displays the retained size and the own size for each object. The important objects to look for are those with a far greater retained size than own size. When a node is expanded, the children displayed are those immediately retained by the parent. This is very useful for analyzing objects that may need optimization or are unnecessarily referencing other objects and therefore preventing them from being collected by the GC.

Live Data View

This was released in the Q3 2011 Service Pack, but it has been enhanced to work with Silverlight. Note: you should run the standalone profiler when working with Silverlight on x64 machines.

<img alt=" style="width: 600px; height: 317px; border-width: 1px; border-style: solid;" src="http://blogs.telerik.com:80//Libraries/Just_Teams/JT_LiveData_for_Q1_Blog_Post_1.sflb" />

Silverlight

JustTrace has had Silverlight support, but what about those out of browser (OOB) Silverlight applications? When selecting Silverlight from the type of application to be profiled, you can now enter the path to a local XAP file.

<img alt=" style="border:1px solid #000000;" src="http://blogs.telerik.com:80//Libraries/Just_Teams/JT_SL_OOB_for_Q1_Blog_Post.sflb" />

Until Next Time

We are constantly striving to make JustTrace one of the most useful tools in your developer toolbox. Stay tuned for even more exciting changes! And be sure to bother us with your ideas and feedback!

Happy profiling!

The JustTrace team

Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
The intended audience of the book 'Hacking Silverlight' was primarily the seasoned professional Silverlight developer who has one or more Web 2.0 projects under their belt. Designed to help that developer connect with the larger Silverlight community and get access to all the knowledge and resources available to you. If that is you, this article can help you take your understanding of Silverlight skills to the next level and not in what you can do but in what happened to Silverlight.
